3 Things Everyone Ought To Know About Life Coaching

It is my opinion that anyone that wants to achieve anything would do well to have a coach.  But don’t take my word for it!  Watch this short video from Tony Robbins about why you might want to have a coach in the first place:

Like Tony says, if you want lasting change you need a coach.

The thing is though, most people don’t understand what life coaching is REALLY about. They tend to think of coaching as some airy fairy thing that people with too much money and not enough sense indulge in.

I don’t blame those people, because life coaching can be a mystery if you’re not in the know. That’s why I’ve decided to bust some of the myths about life coaching, right here and now.

Myth #1: You Have To Be A Top Athlete Or Company Executive To Have A Coach

We all know that coaching is big in the world of sport. Venus and Serena Williams in tennis and Laura Trott in track cycling all know that having a coach is not just nice to have – it’s an absolute must if they want to be successful in their chosen sport.

Their coach isn’t better than them at playing tennis or riding a bike on those crazy wooden circuits, otherwise they’d probably be competing!  What the coach does bring is the ability to observe, give feedback, tweak technique and teach them how to master their psychology.

In the world of business, coaching is becoming the norm, especially at the top levels of the company. This is because successful business people understand the importance of mind set in achieving what they set out to.

“I absolutely believe that people, unless coached, never reach their maximum capabilities”  ~ Bob Nardelli, CEO Home Depot

Given that all that is true, why on earth wouldn’t ‘everybody else’ be taking advantage of this fantastic resource? I think the main reason is they don’t really understand what having a coach can do for them.

Myth #2: It’s The Same as Counselling or Therapy

Don’t get me wrong, counselling and therapy have a place and many people swear by them, but they don’t work for everyone and they’re not the same as coaching

The main difference between coaching and counselling is that coaching is much more forward looking and solution focused. The beauty of this is I don’t need to know your life story, or get you to talk about traumatic experiences over and over. Many times the techniques I use work better if I don’t even know the details of what happened in the past.

My role as a coach is simply to empower my clients to:

  • Recognise where they are in relation to where they want to be
  • Identify the hidden blocks that are holding them back
  • Master their psychology and get their brain working FOR them
  • Create a solution focused action plan that works in the real world

I never cease to be amazed by the power of the coaching process

Myth #3: Coaching Is Just For Fixing Under Performers

Many people have only experienced coaching in the workplace, when it’s been brought in as part of a remedial process, so they end up thinking it’s only for people who are under performing. This is a mistake.

“Life coaching is your opportunity to take your life from good to great!”

~ Author unknown

Your life’s probably pretty good and you’re probably fairly happy with how it is. That’s absolutely brilliant! But isn’t there something more you’d like? Something you’d like to achieve, create, be, do or have? Humans are amazingly creative beings and we can achieve great things, even if it’s in small, personal ways. It might not be a huge world-changing thing, but it would make a difference in your world, which is kind of the same thing.

Having a coach means you’ve got someone who is:

  • Always on your side
  • An impartial observer and sounding board
  • Kind enough to point out when you’re doing that self-sabotage ‘thing’ again
  • Focused on and nurturing the potential in you
  • Your loud and supportive cheer leader!
