Network marketing is a brilliant business model, but it can be really hard work and there’s a lot of advice out there – some good and some really quite bad.
One of the worst bits of advice I’ve heard is to ‘Fake it till you make it’. All very well, but in my experience, network marketers can end up disillusioned if they follow this advice.
I love this quote:

A Mission To Be More Me
It’s a great quote with a heartfelt message that means a lot to me.
A few years ago I set out on a mission to be more me and let my light shine. Not that I was being particularly fake before, but I had so many layers of beliefs and fears about myself that simply weren’t true.
The more I’ve let go of those beliefs, the more authentic I’ve become. I know it because I can feel it, whatever I’m doing and whoever I’m talking to. I also get people telling me all the time how ‘real’ and ‘authentic’ I come across as.
It’s been good for business too, because my life coaching clients know I’m always being honest with them and I never claim to be any better than them. We’re all on our own paths, me included – I’ve just pulled together a suite of tools that help me over the bumps a bit more easily.
All this is why I don’t like hearing the message ‘Fake it till you make it.’ That really doesn’t sit well with me and it definitely doesn’t help your business, whether it’s traditional or network marketing.
Here 3 common ways faking it could be hurting both you and your business:
Not being true to yourself erodes your self-esteem. Let’s face it, our self-esteem can be flaky sometimes and many people will suggest bolstering it by pretending to be someone we’re not.
However, the truth is, faking it will gradually erode our self-esteem further – after all, if we’ve got to pretend to be someone else, that means we’re not good enough as we are. And that means we’re not good enough, full stop.
To truly live to our potential in life and in business, we must first learn to love and accept ourselves as we are.
And if our self-esteem is lacking, there is inevitably a knock-on effect in our ability to do what it takes to build a successful network marketing business.
In network marketing, sometimes we feel we have to act a certain way to attract customers and team members.
The first problem with this is that people can usually tell when we’re not being authentic and they can perceive it as being untruthful. This can actually make them feel less trusting towards us, which is the last thing we want!
If we’re not being authentic, we might inadvertently bring in someone who isn’t the right kind of customer or team member for us.
The risk there is that they will either not stick around, we won’t be able to help them in the right way, or they may turn out to be more trouble than they’re worth.
By being true to ourselves we can be sure of attracting the kind of people we really want to work with AND who we can help the most. We’re also freeing the others up to find the person that’s the best fit for them too.
Network Marketing Is All About Connecting
Since I set out to let go of the person I wrongly thought I was and get in touch with the real me, I’ve lost count of the times other people have told me how they connected with me and the difference I’ve made in their lives.
If you’re in network marketing to make a difference, please think twice before ‘faking it’ or you might never truly ‘make it’.
